This may be the last chance to see the USS Olympia

As I mentioned in an earlier post, there is a distinct possibility that the historic cruiser USS Olympia may be scrapped or sunk. The ship will be closing to visitors this November for what may be the last time. If you are interested in touring this great piece of American History, now is the time to do so.

Philadelphia harrasses bloggers

The city of philadelphia is requiring those who make some money with advertising on their blogs to have a $300 business privilege license according to the Washington Examiner.

Meanwhile the same idiots who are running Philadelphia have paid Carl Greene, the Philadelphia Housing Head, over $300k per year in spite of the fact that he has lost two sexual harrassment lawsuits, settled several others out of court, has one pending, is in foreclosure on his property and owes the IRS over $50k.. Yep, I'm sure that the city is getting it's $350k /year  from Mr. Greene. Maybe if they would hire people who weren't spending all their time groping their employees, they would be more efficient and not have to harrass bloggers.

Elfreth's Alley

Elfreth's Alley is a small street just of Second Street about 2 blocks north of Market. The homes and street appear much the same as they did back in the Colonial days. It is a picturesque view of an earlier Philadelphia

The Historic Cruiser USS Olympia is in danger of being scrapped

The Historic Cruiser USS Olympia is in danger of being lost forever. Financial considerations may result in the ship being sunk or scrapped.

The ship was the flagship of Admiral Dewey at the Battle of Manila during the Spanish American War. It also brought the remains of the unknown soldier home after WWI.  Destroying such an icon of America borders on criminal.

The cost to save the ship is estimated at over 10 million dollars. There is a facebook page with more information about efforts to save the ship.

More information can be found at

Unfortunately this summer might be the last time we will be able to tour this magnificent ship.

Philadelphia's Soda tax and the Greek Collapse

Greece, along with several other European countries, is on the verge of economic collapse. The simple fact is that Greece has been moving further and further towards socialism. Essentially, they have a huge welfare state, expensive socialized medicine and a huge public sector with powerful unions.

The system is finally collapsing from the demands of the welfare class, unions and socialized medicine. Greece is desperately begging other countries to bail them out. Meanwhile, any suggestion of reducing pay or benefits for the public sector union workers is met with violence including burning pregnant women to death in banks.

So, what does this have to do with the proposed Philadelphia soda tax?? Everything. Philadelphia has been a socialist kleptocracy for the last 50 years. An endless cycle of increased social and public sector union spending has driven the productive individuals and businesses from the city. This has resulted in decreasing tax revenues. When liberals are in power in the State and Federal government, Philadelphia can offset some of the result of it's incompetence by obtaining federal and state funding. At some point, that well will run dry, especially given the insane spending of the current administration.

The soda tax is just an attempt to try to grab more money to fund Philadelphia's welfare state and the demands of the city worker's and teacher's unions. Things will not stop at the soda tax. When the city gets more money, the 'civil leaders' and union bosses will be right there with their hands out demanding an increased share.

As Margaret Thatcher once said "The problem with socialism is that, at some point, you run out of other people's money".

If the soda tax is passed, the Philadelphia administration will not be looking to cut costs. Rather, they will continue their insane spending. In due course, they will be looking for other boutique taxes, perhaps a tax on 'fatty foods' or 'salty foods' or some such nonsense.

I'm not sure that Philadelphia will ever be able to pull itself out of the morass that its 'leaders' created. The demographics have shifted to the point where many of the productive people have left leaving the city with a couple of million dependants.

Sooner or later it will collapse and it won't be pretty. Look at the footage of Greece for a preview of what may be in store for us.
